Location
Before you purchase a memorial, you should know that many cemeteries have restrictions that limit the style, size, and shape of the monument you may place in their cemetery. Some cemeteries have restrictions depending on the section in the cemetery. It’s important to know what those limitations are before we begin. We would be happy to help you find out your cemetery’s requirements.
Type
When planning a memorial, the type should be considered early in the planning process. Types range from a large family monument, to a double or single memorial. Maybe you are looking for a remembrance memorial to be placed in a park or a special place.
Style
Monuments come in a wide variety of styles, shapes and sizes. Bevel markers are above ground level but are low to the ground. Grass markers or flat markers lie level with the ground and consist of either granite or bronze. Slant markers are midway in height between lower bevel markers and larger upright monuments. If you prefer the slanted shape but want it to set up taller, a base can be placed underneath to add height like the upright memorials. Upright memorials are typically a vertical or horizontal tablet and set on a base. These memorials are constructed with at least two pieces of erect granite; they can be created in all shapes and sizes. A vertical tablet, as the name implies, is taller than it is wide, and a horizontal tablet is wider than it is tall.
Color
Select the color that most appeals to you. Frequently Asked Pre-Planning Questions (FAQ’s)
Why should I pre-plan a monument or memorial?
Pre-planning allows you to make important decisions about your memorial in advance, including the monument type, granite color, design, inscription, and personalization details. Planning ahead helps ensure your wishes are honored while reducing emotional stress and difficult decisions for family members during a time of loss. Many families also appreciate having additional time to carefully consider all available options.
What information should I have before starting the pre-planning process?
One of the most important steps is determining the cemetery where the memorial will be placed. Many cemeteries have specific requirements regarding monument size, style, material, and placement. Having this information available early helps ensure the memorial design complies with cemetery regulations and prevents delays later in the process.
Can I customize a monument when pre-planning?
Yes. Pre-planning gives you the opportunity to personalize nearly every aspect of a memorial. You can select the monument style, granite color, lettering, artwork, religious symbols, inscriptions, portraits, and other design elements. Many families find comfort in creating a memorial that reflects their values, interests, accomplishments, and life story.
Can couples or family members plan a monument together?
Absolutely. Many couples and families choose to pre-plan companion or family monuments together. This allows everyone involved to discuss design preferences, inscriptions, and memorial details ahead of time, ensuring the finished monument reflects the wishes of all family members while avoiding uncertainty in the future.
